The institute works as a non-profit research institution in the Free State of Saxony and continues the long standing traditions of the Saxon textile research and textile industry. Process-related and product-related research work covers classical textile technologies as well as innovative technical solutions for a wide range of applications. STFI has long experience in the development of products and technologies in the sector of the non-woven textiles.

They have been working in several national project for on-line measurement of thickness and homogeneity of nonwovens, filtration and needle punching, hydro-entanglement etc. and EU-project CRAFT 2005-2007: Knowledge-based process control system to optimize needle performance for high added-value needle-punched nonwovens.

They are also Centre of Excellence in Nonwovens : Comprehensive Know-how and equipment in laboratory and industrial scale.

STFI is experienced in patent applications and holds more then 100 patents. STFI is very interested in exploiting project outcomes into intellectual property. Also utilization of project know-how for industrial partners concerning new methods in product development are to consider.

Their main research fields are:

  • Stitch-bonded nonwovens
  • Development of innovative composite structures for heat protection and sound insulation in cars
  • Testing newly developed polymer materials for spunbonded nonwovens
  • Spunlaced nonwovens
  • Production of functional composite structures
  • Needle-punched nonwovens
  • Production of innovative composite structures.
